If you consider yourself a fan and have not heard of Firespawn yet, you have not been paying enough attention to our fantastic world of metal.
This band consists of members from several Swedish death metal bands with the most well known being LG Petrov and Victor Brandt of Entombed AD fame.
The Reprobate starts quietly enough with a short atmospheric intro before ‘Serpent of the Ocean’ kicks festivities of with some classic and pummelling double kick drumming courtesy of Matte Modin (Defleshed) shows that the band mean business. ‘Blood Eagle’ and ‘Full of Hate’ follow quickly, the twin guitar attack of Victor Brandt and Fredrik Folkare (Unleashed, Necrophobic) bringing a sense of melody to the chaos with some well placed solos and the middle eastern sounding opening to the latter.
From here the album settles into a very familiar, dare it be said, comfortable feeling. This is not a slight on the album or the band in anyway. This is better than their previous effort ‘Shadow Realms’ and sounds like a far more cohesive unit; a quick look at the lyric sheet shows that there has been a more collaborative effort by the band to write the music in particular.
But in saying, that it does also sound very samey. While each song holds its own as a whole it sort of meshes together a bit in the middle with the exception of the brutal ‘General’s Creed’ with possibly the heaviest vocals Petrov has committed to tape. Members of Firespawn have said from the beginning of the project that as a group they just wanted to play the most brutal form of this music they could, and they achieve that pretty well, especially LG and his deeper more guttural roar as opposed to his day job. But the centre of the album all seems to blur together until the title track ‘The Reprobate’ raises its ugly head near the end and snaps you back into this band’s gruesome world.
Despite its weak mid-section this is a great album to stick on, bang your head and possibly enjoy a cold beverage or three.
