Death metal that would scare your grandparents

The good ship Malevolent Creation has always sailed the rough seas of death detal, releasing quality material but always struggling to hold themselves together as a group. Following the death of original vocalist Brett Hoffman, all seemed lost and another band that had managed to carry on since the early 90s was almost gone. Guitarist and only founding member remaining Phil Fasciana did manage to find a like minded bunch of miscreants to continue their legacy on this, their 13th album.

This band having been around as long as they have, Malevolent Creation isn’t here to ply you with any of the newer death metal sounds. Right from the outset, they are all windmilling hair and blast beats. ‘End The Torture’ starts out with short cinematic soundbite before blasting completely through to wreck your neck and destroy the non-heavy elite.

This course of action continues throughout, the band never take their foot far from the throttle, allowing only short burst of breathing room so the listener doesn’t black out from the extremity on display. Some of the go to picks have to be ‘Agony for the Chosen’ and ‘Born From Pain’, both showing the fastest and slowest the band is willing to play their music at, while ‘Knife at Hand’ shows some true old school death metal depravity.

Towards the middle of the album and its centrepiece track, ‘The Beast Awakens’, it begins to lose some early shine, becoming a little samey. Vocalist/guitarist Lee Wollenschlaeger’s lower vocal growl, although clear begins to come across like noise in the faster parts into the album’s second half.

The only real gripe is with the length of the album. Music like this was created as a short sharp dose of aural violence, and any album that sounds this good but requires a short break in the middle somewhere only has issues with too much to eat at the table. There is only ever so much food you can take on board before you are full. But at the end of the day Malevolent Creation play death metal that would scare your grandparents, let alone anyone that comes near you while you are on the bus windmilling. Get into it!
