A fun-filled country/rock/metal adventure

Danish band Volbeat’s fifth studio album Outlaw Gentlemen & Shady Ladies continues the Volbeat pattern and those willing to take a musical mash up of hard rock/metal meets country will be rewarded.

The schizophrenic swings from track to track from pure country rock n’ roll to Metallicaesque headbanging metal glory, albeit with that ice cool Volbeat touch, are all here. You’ll either love or hate these guys quickly – they have a distinct sound.

Outlaw Gentlemen starts off slowly with an acoustic instrumental that melds into a straight up rock n’ roll tune named ‘Pearl Hart’. The introduction lacks the kind of punch needed to kick off an album as they meander through two decent rock n’ roll tracks but nothing to get you off your feet and playing air guitar to or even coax a gentle nod of the head. Saying that, all is quickly forgotten thereafter as the rest of the album is another fun-filled country/rock/metal adventure. We have mix of rock n’ roll tracks that will divide opinion amongst the metal fraternity audience but scattered amongst these tunes are some well orchestrated, hard hitting metal goodness.

Track four, ‘Dead But Rising’ is a rocking metal jam and ‘Room 24’ continues in the harder edge direction with the interesting twist of King Diamond on vocals. ‘Black Bart’ is one the faster songs and the band’s inclusion of ex-Anthrax guitarist Rob Caggiano has clearly inspired some of the tracks. An interesting choice is the cover of Young the Giant’s ‘My Body’ It’s catchy and a certain sing-a-long on Volbeat setlists on upcoming tours. The current single ‘Cape of Our Hero’ is a radio friendly rock number that tells the story of a man revisiting his past childhood with his hero – his father. Yes, tearjerker lyrics included, the band is great at telling stories.

Michael Poulsen has created a vocal style that is catchy but still holds a hard rock/metal edge to entice the average headbanger. If you haven’t heard these guys before, search them out & you will be rewarded. Rumours persists that Volbeat may be on our shores early 2014 – hopefully these rumours can become reality.
