People may argue about which band is the biggest, the best or the coolest on the Soundwave stages this year but there is no doubt who will be the youngest. The girls from LA teen rockers Cherri Bomb may barely be old enough to drive but they've already toured with Smashing Pumpkins and played some of the biggest music festivals in the world, including Sonisphere. As they prepare for their first tour of Australia, Loud had a short chat with guitarist/keyboardist and singer Miranda Miller about who they are, what they've done and what they're looking forward to when they're here.
Q: How much are you looking forward to bringing the band to Australia?
A: Oh I'm so excited! I've never been to Australia so I am so excited to go.
Q: And you're doing some other shows outside the festivals which might be an even better opportunity for you.
A: Oh yeah, we're opening for Bush and Staind, which is absolutely amazing. I'm so excited because I've loved them forever. I've loved Bush and been listening to Bush forever and Staind is awesome.
Q: Cool. So, give us just a brief history of Cherri Bomb.
A: Well Julia (Pierce - vocals/guitar) started the band and she found Nia (Lovelis - drums). They got me because I was in Florida while they were looking for a keyboardist, and so I sent in some videos. We were looking for a bassist so we asked Nia's sister (Rena) to be our temporary fit. After a couple of rehearsals, we knew she was right, and that's how all four of us got together.
Q: So what what be the highlight for you guys so far?
A: The highlight would have to be opening for the Foo Fighters. It was crazy. It was in Cologne, Germany.
Q: You haven't been to Australia yet, but where else in the world have you played so far?
A: We've done festivals in Europe. We went to England, we want to Germany and Ireland and we went to a few places there. Also, we went to France and we've played in a few states around the States... a few states around the States! (laughs) ...opening for Smashing Pumpkins as well.
Q: How has the general reaction been to your music so far? Are people really getting into the Cherri Bomb experience?
A: Yeah. I think it's really positive. People seem really surprised because we take it seriously, you know?
Q: I see that a lot. I've been friends with some female musicians for a long time, and it seems like whenever you get more than two of them in a band together, people just seem to think it's a gimmick. Has that happened to you?
A: Yeah. We've had people say that we can't do what we're doing because we're young, or because we're girls. We just say, No, we can do what we're doing.
Q: Do you find people pointing to the Samantha Maloney (former Hole and Motley Crue drummer, and Cherri Bomb's manager) factor, as if you wouldn't be able to do anything like this by yourselves?
A: It hasn't exactly been pointed out. We've done a lot of work and she's helped us with a lot of stuff too, so it kinda works hand-in-hand.
Q: So what have you got prepared for us when you get here?
A: Well we've been working on our setlist, and we've been working on our whole set for a while. We're hoping just to go on stage and play some rock!
Q: It's probably going to be the first time most people here will have heard from you. It's going to be a whole new experience for them and for you.
A: (laughing) Yeah!
Q: What else are you planning to do while you're here with the festival? Is there anything in particular that you want to see or anyone that you want to catch up too?
A: Oh I really wanna see Marilyn Manson and Bush. I'm so excited to see them (laughs).
Q: You've got plenty of time between shows while you're here to so you might get to see some of the country. Do you get to do that much when you're touring normally?
A: Actually we got a couple days off last time, when we went to Europe. We got to go around some places. We're hoping we got a lot of time in Australia too, 'cause we wanna see AC/DC Lane and do the Bridge Climb and all that kinda stuff.
