Melbourne melodic metalcore crew Feed Her to the Sharks have been working at a frenzied pace since forming in February 2009. Since that time, the quintet has landed many high-status shows and also been signed to one of the world’s largest and most prestigious management teams, Outerloop Management. The band recorded their debut album, The Beauty of Falling, in their own studio while collaborating with world-renowned metal producers Fredrik Nordström and Henrik Udd, who handled the mixing of the debut album. It also saw them tour with heavyweight hitters such as Asking Alexandria, Suicide Silence, Darkest Hour and August Burns Red.

Fast forward to 2013 and the band is back with a monstrous follow-up record, Savage Seas.
Following a recent national tour supporting Born of Osiris, they will spend the rest of the year touring in Australia, the US and Europe. Guitarist Kim Choo gave Loud the lowdown.

Q: The band just wrapped up the Born of Osiris tour. How was that experience?
A: It went really good, better than we expected. We basically jumped on that tour because we hadn’t been playing for a while, and it was our first shows back with the new line-up and everything. It was killer; the dudes were awesome to hang out with. Because you never really know what to expect when you tour with bands that you’ve never even met before. It was really, really good. Everything was positive from what we gathered. Met a lot of old people that we remember from being on the road a couple of years back, and they were still into the band. Also met a lot of new friends as well, who were definitely keen on the new material.

Q: What shows have you scheduled for the near future?
A: Yeah, well we just got confirmed for the Loud Fest, which is in August. That will be hitting Brisbane, Sydney, Adelaide and Melbourne. Not entirely sure about the line-up with that one; I know that maybe two or three bands have been announced for it so far, including ourselves. So I think they’re announcing a band every week leading up to it. We also definitely want to do a run of shows where we hit a lot of those country towns and the sort of towns in between the major cities, because they’re really fun shows. The kids out in those sorts of towns, they really appreciate it when a band comes out. We’ve played like Mount Gambier, Warrnambool, Toowoomba, Dubbo, those sorts of towns, and they were always really good shows for what they were. The kids love it, so definitely want to book a run of shows hitting those sorts of areas in the future.

Q: Good to hear. You’ll be touring in support of the new album Savage Seas. In what way(s) do you feel it’s an improvement upon your debut?
A: Basically we went into writing this album, just building on what we previously did with our old album. We love writing music, we love creating music and that’s what we want to do. And just make music that we’re happy with. We decided to step it up. We went over to Sweden to record with Fredrik, and we just wanted to get a good product that we were all stoked about. We feel that we got a pretty good CD out of it, so we’re pretty happy about that.

Q: What’s the process of working with Fredrik like?
A: He mixed our debut album, The Beauty of Falling as well, so we already had a working relationship with him. It was just a matter of booking in the time. We went in there, basically we got off the plane, and it was just go to bed, wake up the next morning and straight into it. Start tracking, get everything done and just start working on getting the record together.

Q: It is intimidating at all when walking into Studio Fredman?
A: No, not at all, because he’s the sort of dude that just, he wants to make sure any band he records is having fun. That’s like the most important thing to him. So we went in there, and we weren’t uncomfortable at all. He just made sure that he got the best performances out of all of us, and just got the job done. The first album was tracked by us, and then we sent it over to be mixed. Whereas the new one, he did it from start to finish, so he knew the sounds that he was going for when we started the project. He knew the drum tones he wanted, guitar tone, everything. That sort of led to a better final product, because he could see our vision from the start, and could work his magic in that sense.

Q: What’s the overall feel and look of the studio like?
A: Basically, there’s the studio itself, and outside of that is basically a small room that’s probably the size of a lounge room, your standard lounge room. There’s a few bunk beds there that the guys can sleep in, a small kitchen, a TV and a couch, and that’s about it. That’s just sort of where you chill out. There’s also a Pro Tools set-up in the kitchen that we actually tracked bass on while I was doing guitars in the studio. Our bass player was in the kitchen tracking bass, just to save time. In terms of studios, I wouldn’t say it’s like… I wouldn’t walk in there and be like, ‘whoa, this looks like a multi-million dollar studio’ or anything, but it definitely has a really good live space, a really good control room. We’re just happy with the sound that he pulls. You can see that by all the stuff he’s done in the past.

Q: There’s obviously considerable expense associated with travelling to Sweden to do the album. What kind of sacrifices did the band have to make to be able to do so, and does the finished product justify that effort in your view?
A: It was an experience. We made really good friends with Fredrik and Henrik. It’s one of those things that, we feel that because he mixed our first record we really wanted him to do this record because he already had a grasp on the sound that we were going for. Like I said before, we felt really comfortable going over there, and he was happy to do that. In terms of the cost and everything like that, at the end of the day we’ve got five members in the band, we all work and stuff like that, so we just made it happen, you know?

Q: Should more Australian heavy bands pool their money and undertake a similar process in order to get the finished product that they want, as well as one that can compete on a worldwide level?
A: Yeah, well, going back to your last question as well, there’s some great studios and producers in Australia as well. A lot of bands do travel overseas. I would say it’s worth it, because if you get that sort of sound from over there, and you get that name on your record, it definitely helps. When people see that it was done by Fredrik Nordström, then it gives it that little bit of edge when people hear about it. I mean, you’re asking the question about it right now, you know what I’m saying? We’ve given you something to talk about in the interview. At the end of the day, if you can get a good quality product and you don’t have the money to do it, it’s just about getting your vision to CD, and getting it sounding as best you can.

Q: How do you all juggle the band around day jobs and the like?
A: Yeah, we do, because we’re still unsigned at the moment as well. We’re all working, basically saving for whatever the next expense is we’ve got. We’ll just work, save up enough for the next thing, work, save up enough for the next thing (laughs). It just keeps going in that sort of cycle. But it’s definitely starting to get easier now for us, because we’re starting to make a little bit of cash from shows, merch sales and CD sales, that sort of thing, to keep it going and just keep pushing forward. It’s not easy, but we’re making it work.

Q: Have you had much label interest?
A: We’ve been talking to labels here and there. Our management over in America have been hitting up a few labels. It’s hard for us as well, because we want to be dealing with someone, whether it’s a label or whoever that actually cares about the band. We just don’t want to lock in to anything… If we want to sign up for something like that, we want to make sure that they’re doing stuff for us that we can’t do ourselves. ‘Cause we’ve done everything ourselves thus far, so it’s like, why bring someone on board when we can get the job done just as well ourselves with a lot of things?
